traditional devotion during the month of june is to the sacred heart of jesus which, while pointing to the great symbol of love which is central to the gospel witness, invites us to look more deeply into our own hearts. by focussing on christ’s heart we are challenged, quite literally, to examine what makes us tick as individuals. whenever we are faced with an image of jesus revealing his heart, whether in statue or picture form, not only do we realise that the divine approach to our humanity is always one of empathetic concern and compassion, but that our own hearts should mirror what we behold. at one level, the heart of jesus always offers consolation and the intuitive acceptance that “ god will live in us and his love will be complete in us” (1 john 4:12) but we have entirely missed the point if at the same time we are not disturbed in the realisation of just how cold our own hearts remain when faced with the needs and concerns of those around us. among the most popular expressions of the sacred heart is that associated with france’s great shrine of reparation towering over central paris. the montmartre statue depicts jesus with his arms open in embrace: “ come to me , all who labour and are overburdened, and i will give you rest. shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for i am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls” (matthew 11:29). in a world which appears increasingly polarised and troubled it is good to keep this essentially inclusive image before our eyes, and a time when the preciousness of every individual human life is called into question as never before a new emphasis on the loving humanity of jesus needs to be the order of the day. devotion to the sacred heart is also a guarantee that we do not slip back into pre-christian stereotypes of a forbidding divinity who needs to be appeased and who looks on our failures with vengeful intent. “ god is love and anyone who loves lives in god and god lives in them (1 john 4:16): nowhere is this message brought home more forcefully than in the heart of the saviour. “ in love there can be no fear, but fear is driven out by perfect love, because to fear is to expect punishment and anyone who is afraid is still imperfect in love ”. the heart is recognised, of course, as a universal symbol and as such its imagery transcends differing languages and cultures, but the christian application contains its own insight: the heart of jesus is always shown as being wounded and is a constant and powerful reminder of jesus’ words that “ a man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends ” (john 15:13). here is the true definition of love: as something rooted in an out-going charity which is always prepared to put the needs of others before one’s own concerns. we are aware of the phrase “ heartbroken ” to describe some deep-felt trauma – jesus reveals a heart literally broken open, yes, because of the soldier’s spear, but at a more profound level because he would hold nothing back in the redemptive offering of himself. as his life blood drains from a dying body we see the absolute, overflowing generosity of god himself: “ he did not cling to his equality with god but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and became as men are, and being as all men are he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross ” (philippians 2:7). this is a love that is so amazing it can only be divine in origin. karl rahner was a german jesuit, formed in saint ignatius’ own love of the sacred heart. in a meditation on the priesthood (which has relevance for every believer) “ the man with the broken heart” he writes: “ anyone who has the courage to experience grace and know desolation of heart, to be faithful, to follow conscience for no reward, to love the one furthest away as neighbour, discovers their own heart, begins to understand what is meant by heart ”. zechariah had prophesied: “ they will look on the one
